He was going to ask why she was so sad and worried . . . but he knew. He just wanted to know more but without having to ask, she asked another question and he knew that they were moving the conversation towards the issue. "No, but thats not too rare for me," he explained, not wanting her to worry any more than she already was. "What about you? How was the rest of your night?" He wanted to hold her and tell her that nothing had changed, but everything had changed. How did she see him now? What was she going to do?

"I didn't sleep." She answered, then finally looking up at him she asked, "Why is that not rare for you?" It was a step, baby steps. The first one of the next one trillion questions she would flood him with in the next few hours. She had millions more then the trillions she would ask but she had decided to start small. The trillion questions were as small you she could force them to get. She knew the next few would be the hardest, and the answers would define were they went from here, and if they even went anywhere. ((Icons not of my own making. Credit goes to 'Leah' of MP.))

If the circumstances had been different, he would have made a joke. But for now, he was going to be a little more serious because he knew she deserved answers, and he needed to give them to her so she could make a decision. "When I phase into . . . a wolf -- " It felt odd to finally say that in those words, especially to her. "Its usually to protect La Push. To make sure no outsiders are making any trouble." He would leave out the vampire detail, just for now. He would need to explain that later. "I didn't mean to worry you Ray. I didn't want you to be afraid . . . I don't want you to be afraid now."

But she was afraid. Animals could smell fear, could Paul? He was admitting in day light to the events of last night. It was a step. "Protect La Push . . ." He had said that before, it had sound causal when he was joking about his---OH. Her face changed into one of mild shock. "Your not--your not the only one who can do this, are you?" She asked, his jokes about mobs and things seeming realer now. . . . Jake! Jake had joined his mob! Rachael wanted to look away but didn't let her self. She needed to see the truth in his face. Perhaps Rachael could not look away, but Paul did when she vocalized the realization -- or question -- that he was not the only one who could do this. He look straight ahead at the water. Is this how Jake wanted his sister to find out? He was not going to keep it from her, but he wondered if Jake would have ever told her had no one imprinted on her. "Sam, Jared, Quil, Embry . . . Jake." Those were names that would have been familiar to her, she knew them. She had seen him hang out with them. And now, she knew why. He did not go on, allowing this new piece of information to sink in. He was going to have to explain this slowly, because it was a lot to absorb.

"Jake." She said her voice barely a whisper. Which answered her question of 'where they human'. Jacob was her own blood. "How long have you all been . . . . protecting?" She asked not sure how to quite ask how long he had been 'phasing' has he called it. Then she recalled the stories her Father used to tell Jacob at night. About how they came from wolves and protected La Push from cold people. Cold could be an acronym for evil? "My--My Dad knows doesn't he?" She was making connections. ((Icons not of my own making. "A few years. The last time I saw you, I had never phased before." The whole imprinting thing was going to be difficult to explain to her . . . right now, he would just concentrate on the fact that she knew a bunch of guys -- including her own brother -- who could turn into wolves. He looked at her and silently nodded when she realized that Billy knew. "He does. He knew all along, but didn't say anything until Jake first phased. If you ever heard about how sick Jake was for a while, it was cause he had started phasing. Billy knew exactly what to do." He tried to make it so that Billy was supportive, just in case she was angry that her father knew about this whole thing. He didn't know if she would or wouldn't be, but Paul got along with Billy and so tried to defend him if need be.

Rachael had not exactly been in deep contact with her male family, and had not known Jacob was so sick. "So when you start to--to phase, you become real sick?" Rachael was shocked to learn something so major had gone on in her family and she had been unable to see it, and they had not bothered telling her. She sighed as she thought this over, wondering how much of her brother's life she had missed. "Dose it hurt?" She whispered. ((Icons not of my own making. Credit goes to 'Leah' of MP.))

"Everyone does. Its natural for us to go through that sort of process . . . we just hadn't been warned about it, so when it did happen, we had no idea what was going on." He did not want to worry her with the illnesses and pain that came with becoming a wolf, so he went on to something more positive . . . and something that would possibly freak her out even more. "Its hard for us to feel pain now. We have accelerated healing, so if you were to stab me with a knife, it would heal moments after." He paused before continuing, knowing the next part would clarify something that she had frequently commented on in the past. "We also have really high body temperature, and our speed is heightened. The fact that we're all so big, is also part of becoming a wolf."

That explained allot. Racahel's eyes dropped down over his body taking in his size and thought over Jacob's 'growth' along with the other 'boys' of La Push. Yeah, big tall, and hot and hard. . . . Closing her eyes and blushing at the double meaning in her head she spoke with out opening them. "I am not going to stab you with a knife." She teased, in a stress sounded voice.
When her eyes opened, she looked up at his face, "At lest now I know why you always feel like you have a fever." Then, "You heal fast? Like in the X-Men movies?" She tried to imagine it in her head. ((Icons not of my own making. Credit goes to 'Leah' of MP.))

He smiled at her joke, knowing that she was trying to hard to lighten the intensity of what they were talking about. "Well thats a relief. I was wondering if I would have to check for sharp objects," he joked. Allowing it to slowly sink he, he nodded at the comparison. "Exactly like that. Cuts, bruises, everything heals really fast on its own. Its why you can see us doing the craziest things, and when we're done, we don't have a mark on us." It was especially good for Paul because since he got in quite a few fights, he would get a black eye here, a broken nose there, and Rachael would never know . . . which would prevent her from worrying about him.
"There's something else Ray . . . its not just the guys. Leah Clearwater is also a wolf." He waited to see how she would react to that. "Its weird, and really uncommon. Its never happened before, and probably won't happen again." He did not want her to worry about turning into a wolf herself. He just wanted to be completely honest with her, and not withhold any information.

"Leah?!" Rachael said slightly shocked. Leah had looked rather buff when she had seen her from afar. "wow" She said not really shocked over a girl as much as Leah. Leah had been a 'pretty girl' or a 'girlly girl' back in high school. Not really the fight to protect La Push in the woods and dirt type. Still, nothing about La Push was the same as when she left it over three years ago, so she wasn't overly shocked.
"Dose being a-a wolf, change your personalities or anything?" Maybe that would explain Jacob's less positive outlook, Leah's less girlishness and why Paul suddenly loved her all seemingly out of the blue. ((Icons not of my own making. Credit goes to 'Leah' of MP.))

That was the question he had been trying to avoid. "Well we are more hungry I guess," he said, trying to keep it light. "There are certain things that go along with being a wolf. For example, when we're in wolf form, we can telepathically communicate with each other. Its the only way we can communicate when we're in that form. But it doesn't work once we phase back to our human selves." He was stalling explaining about imprinting . . . that was something that she could react horribly too. So far, she was doing rather well. She had not exploded, or started crying . . . she seemed to still be absorbing everything. When would it be too much? At what point was her limit? "But personality wise, we are still pretty much the same people we were before phasing . . . for the most part."

"Oh." She said while looking at his face, trying to see if she thought he was the same person. "So if someone, changes a little, it's not from phaseing? It could be just from . . . say the responsibility of their new job or life style?" She was trying to find a reason for 'new Paul'. She liked new Paul, allot. . . . a whole allot. She loved new Paul. "You can talk to each other in your minds?!" She asked shocked but not sounding bad shocked, more interested shock. ((Icons not of my own making. Credit goes to 'Leah' of MP.))

He was surprised by her reaction. She did not seem afraid, but just genuinely interested. It was a huge relief, even though he had not quite told her everything yet. "Yeah, that definitely would affect us. We just had a lot more things to worry about, guess you could say we aren't exactly typical teenagers or young adults," he said smiling. "Communicating is essential, cause when we are patrolling, or stopping an intruder, we need to be able to strategize and make sure everyone is on the same page."

Maybe that was it? Maybe Paul had grown up and when he did it . . . . made her look different to him. "Intruders?!" She asked with a slight frown. "Paul, maybe you should explain what your guarding the town from, cause I don't it's simply the bad asses from the Mackah reservation. What's out there that we would need . . . wolves to guard us?" Paul did not want to have to tell her. He wanted her to feel safe, to not worry about vampires lurking around La Push, or anywhere in the world really. He wished she could have lived without this knowledge; that she could have that sort of innocence. "I wish I didn't have to tell you," he said, vocalizing his thoughts. "I wish you could live without knowing this. You already learned that there are such things as werewolves, I didn't want you to know this either." He was building it up . . . but it was worth the build up. He paused for a few moments and then took a deep breath.
"Vampires." That one word sounded so ridiculous. "We're protecting La Push from vampires. They've lived here for a while, they move and come back every so often. There is a family of them that live in Forks, and they claim that they only drink animal blood, not humans. We made a treaty with them a long time ago. But its our job to make sure they don't hurt anyone." He stopped there, waiting and watching for her reaction.

When he said the word werewolves she shivered but it wasn't anything compared to the word vampires. She just stared in him frozen in shock. These were Hollywood made up Halloween costume type ideas and if she had not seen him . . . Wolf-out with her own eyes she would have called him a lair. As it was she knew he was really a w--One of them. She couldn't wrap her mind around the words.
The only thing that made her snap out of it was the realization she had placed Paul in mortal danger with out knowing it! "Paul!" She squeaked and drove for him, grabbing the fork she had brought for him to eat with and pulling it back. "This my my Great-Grandmother's sliver! I could have killed you!" Silver killed werewolves didn't it?! Everyone knew that! Silver = bad for werewolves and crosses were bad for vampires! ((Icons not of my own making. Credit goes to 'Leah' of MP.))

While he had been watching her so carefully, her reaction that he saw made him laugh. He didn't mean to tease her, it was just so funny. He did not expect her to react that way. He put his arm around her in attempt to comfort her. "Its not like that Rachael," he said in between laughs, trying to get serious again though it was becoming difficult. "The way we are, and the way vampires are . . . its not hollywood style. Like us for instance, you couldn't tell I was a werewolf. We don't turn under a full moon. Vampires don't walk around in capes and they don't have long fangs. They look like normal people, sorta." Maybe it was not wise to explain who exactly they were. "Are you okay?" He asked, trying to see just how much he had traumatized her.

Now she felt silly. Blushing she shrugged, "I feel like a two year old who doesn't understand anything going on around her, and it's scary and over whelming." She said honestly. She was glad he was laughing however. The moment was getting to tense, and she was also glad she didn't have to hide her silver and explain that one to her father. She pulled her knees back up to her chest and wrapped her arms around them while looking up at him. She felt very foolish. "How many, non-were--" She couldn't say the word. "Non-wolves know you about guys?" Her Dad was one. . . . unless there was something she didn't know about ehr father? ((Icons not of my own making. Credit goes to 'Leah' of MP.))

"Most of our parents know. Embry's mother doesn't. He keeps sneaking out of the house," he said chuckling as he remembered hearing about how Embry would constantly get lectured. "Its in the tribe, I guess while no one really expects it . . . its not a surprise when it happens. Sam is the alpha of the pack, the leader. Jake is second in command." Paul had been close to beta, before Jake joined their pack. Who could argue with bloodlines though.

She was shocked at that news, "My baby brother is the almost leader of a pack of werewolves?!" She asked in a tone that said out of all of this that Paul had told her, this part was hardest to wrap her mind around. Jacob? Wow. . . . he was that good? He could do something besides build cars? Huh. "I just found out I know nothing about my brother." She didn't know Jacob well. How could she have missed . . . .all this? ((Icons not of my own making. Credit goes to 'Leah' of MP.))

"Thats not true. You know him Rachael. He is still the same old Jake. He just happens to be a wolf too. But like I said, his personality is still the same." Well, that is until he met the Cullen freaks and Bella. They had completely messed up everything and it was a very irritating thing for Paul to think about. He had to push it out of his mind, otherwise the anger would be enough to make him phase right here and now. And he did not want to phase in front of her again . . . at least not at this moment. "It runs in his veins; he's a born leader."

"Why do I have the feeling that when you say 'in his veins' your not talking about in general." She looked up at Paul. "What is in his veins?" But she could guess. "He's just a descendant from a long line of wolves who were his ancestors. Ever hear of your dad talking about Ephraim Black?" Paul paused . . . he would need to invite her to the next camp fire where they exchanged legends and myths. It would be better than him trying to explain everything to her. "Come with me, next time all of us meet. We talk about our ancestors and those who had packs before us. Or just ask Billy even. He's good at explaining that stuff." He wasn't sure if she would feel comfortable asking her father that stuff, so he extended an invitation to her instead.

She wanted to know more it seemed with his comment he didn't want to explain, or didn't know how. He was inviting her to go hang out with a pack of werewolves?! "Oh." She said, trying to decide on how safe that was. Leave it to uptight Rachael to think about that part, overly much. She didn't want to be uptight Rachael. "Sounds like you guys have do that often?" "Yeah we do. Its actually a lot of fun. You know the guys who go there, so they wouldn't be complete strangers to you." Would Billy let her go? "Jared brings Kim as well, and Emily comes. We all stay in our human form the whole time too, in case you're worried about that." It would be understandable if she was, but he figured by saying that there were other non-wolves there, it may help her feel more comfortable with the idea of going.

"Yeah they do. When we find someone we love and are devoted to, we are allowed to tell them about our phasing and such. Both Emily and Kim know, and they are pretty fine with it." They had taken it rather well . . . but the answer to her next question may sound differently. How was he going to explain that without sounding like he would do the same? "Actually Ray . . . " He did not want to make Sam sound bad either. "Sam was the very first of all of us to phase. He was by himself, with no support, and a million questions about what was happening to him. He couldn't control himself . . . and so one day . . . he just lost control around someone he loved." Hopefully that would not scare Rachael. "If I didn't feel so happy and calm around you, I would worry about the exact same thing . . . and I still do a bit actually." Perhaps this would give her the out she was looking for . . . or perhaps not.

"I don't understand." And she didn't. "He lost control, as in the wolf takes over or something? I am not sure use I understand how that is." She didn't know the triggers and the details of phasing. She wasn't sure how Sam could have done that to Emily. Rachael thought Paul had said they were still the same person, and could talk to each other. If Sam was the same person, was he the type to attack girls? "Your worried about attacking me?" She asked not able to keep all the fear out of her voice. Fear for them. ((Icons not of my own making.
