Everything had to be perfect; which meant nothing was going even close. It was only a causal lunch but it was with Paul's ex. Rachael had never had allot of self confidence, and in high school she had been chubby, shy and sad. It had taken her leaving La Push and memories of her mother for Rachael to find self peace and to be happy.
It had taken her one visit back to find love and something more then just happiness.
So when Paul informed his four and 1/2 months pregnant imprintee that his ex was coming over to the house to say hello, Rachael felt like a nervous high school again. Only think time, she would have beside her. The house looked sort of clean, but the kitchen was a mess, the 'simple' meal Emily had showed her how to make turned into a not so simple disaster, and Rachael only hoped it would taste ok. She had wanted to shower and change into something flattering but not was out of time. She she was currently wearing relaxed fit jeans, and one of Paul's smaller tshirts. Which only made her look chubby again and not pregnant. [/blockquote] ((Icons not of my own making. Credit goes to 'Leah' of MP.))

This lunch could either go extremely well, or be the worst idea Paul has ever had . . . well, not the worst but definitely high up there on the list. He had invited Maya over to meet Rachael. He was not afraid that he would still have feelings for Maya or anything of the sort; he was perfectly happy with Rachael. He just wasn't sure if this would be awkward for either woman. Maya did seem pretty happy to see him . . . and rather excited over the fact that he was in love, and a future father. Still, Paul wasn't sure what the comfort level was going to be like with the three of them in one room. Oh well. He would make it comfortable.
He walked back into the house after a patrol. He had to make sure that he got here before Maya. It would be even weirder if Rachael and her met without him there . . . or that's what he figured anyway. "Hey Rach!" He called as he went straight to the bedroom to grab a t-shirt. He threw it on, not dressing in anything other than the ordinary -- besides actually wearing a shirt. He went to where she was and put his arms around her, giving her a quick kiss. "Woah, was there an explosion in here or something?" He asked, looking around the kitchen. Paul was not one to be concerned about mess, but he had to tease his normally neat Rachael.

"Your not funny today Paul." Rachael said after he kissed her. She had been having a rather awkward morning. Her stress level was up. There was one fear that came up more now that he was closer to her. One she didn't dare think on, because it scared her so much. It was the fear that had caused the mess this morning. Paul chose Maya, Paul chose Rebecca. When he stopped phasing and this magical thing that made him her's went away, who would he chose?
Rachael had known of Maya in school, they didn't travel in the same circles, Rachael had been shy, chubby and no where near bold, kids like Paul, Leah, Sam and Rebecca had ruled the school. Maya had been more or less with in that circle of friends. Rachael however had NOT known Paul and Maya had gone out. "So you dated her in high school?"[/blockquote] ((Icons not of my own making. Paul couldn't help but chuckle. "I think I'm hilarious," he said grinning innocently as he grabbed a carton of milk from the fridge and took a nice long gulp from it. It was a good thing he didn't have a lot in his mouth when Rachael asked her next question, otherwise, he may have spit it out. Instead, he just slightly choked on it. After taking a couple of seconds to swallow, and clear his throat -- more than once so he would have some stalling time -- he looked at her, still smiling a little, but also knew he had to be careful what he said because he could give a really bad answer to that question.
"Yeah, well . . . sorta. It wasn't anything too serious," he said shrugging, trying to sound as casual as possible. "She went away to college. We were more friends than anything else." He didn't want to lie to her, so he was trying to tell her the truth without making this whole situation more awkward and raise the discomfort level. "Ray, she's coming over to meet you cause I want my friend to meet the woman that I love." He paused. "You being the woman that I love and her being the friend," he quickly clarified. Stupid jargon! "I love you," he added in a tone that implied he knew he was just digging his hole.

"Paul I've seen most of your high school 'casuals'." Paul's definition wasn't Rachael's causal. "I mean. . . " Did he sleep with her? Had he been with anyone before her, like that? How long had he been with Maya? If they only broke up because she went to college, then how did it end? With left over feelings, or promises that were not broken because of imprinting? OH LORD! Would Maya be Paul's Leah!?
"Well, I just was wondering . . . " Everything! Darn pregnancy hormones! She was going to cry if she keep this up. Everything made her cry, and some tall beautiful girl was going to come over here and smile at Paul and Rachael was short, chubby looking because of the twins, and hormonal, while her house was a mess, and she wasn't wearing anything pretty, just Paul's shirt! Uh oh . . . apparently, Paul wasn't doing a very good job of describing his past and current relationship with Maya. He could also tell Rachael was getting upset. He quickly went to her and put his arms around her, pulling her into a hug. "Ray, you can ask me anything you want," he assured in a soothing voice, his way of saying he had nothing to hide; no secrets, no unexpressed feelings for someone else. "I don't wanna be with anyone else but you, and that will never change." He pulled away a little so that he could see her. "Trust me." How else could he convince her? "Everything that happened in school or whatever is in the past. My life started when I fell in love with you." SO much better than saying when he imprinted on her, and he couldn't say when I 'met' you because technically when they met . . . he was an ass to her. He was trying to be charming, and romantic . . . and everything that he usually wasn't when he was with anyone but Rachael.

Now she was crying! But instead of the emotional fear tears, there was happy, oh Paul your so sweet Tears. They were very different! Very different. "Oh Paul." She said and leaned up to kiss him. He was go sweet and good to her, how others could only seen him as an angry idiot was beyond her. They only saw the 'tough guy' persona he put out there.
"I will try to behave my self," She joked, "No hormonal emotional out burst while your guest is here." She had been doing this a bit more lately, been on an emotional roller coaster, being happy one moment, sad the next, in love in the next and so on, and so on. With Paul around the emotions were mostly high and good ones but still had tears with them. When he was gone and she was alone they went to some of the lower ones. Even though Paul had tried to prevent her from crying, it was even more inevitable especially with her hormones or whatever it was that was making her more emotional. Still, he loved seeing her smile . . . and her tension seemed to be put at rest a bit. "Thanks Ray. I love you for doing this. I'm sure you guys will get along." He was SERIOUSLY hoping they would get along. "Is there anything else you wanna know before she comes? Like I said, I don't have anything to hide." He kept his arms around her, making sure she was emotionally stable with this whole thing before Maya showed up. If she wasn't, he would explain to her why she couldn't come for lunch today. But he knew his Rachael, she was a kind person and was willing to give anyone a chance. After all, she had given Paul like ten chances.

May drove toward Paul's new house, stoping breifly by her mom's plae to drop the dog off. She didn't often leave Darcey at home, but she was nervous enough meeting Rachel and she didn't want to risk anything. She assumed Rachel would be ok with dogs, seeing as she was with Paul how always had dogs, but wasn't sure.
She hoped she looked ok. She had changed out of her t-shirt quickly when she dropped the dog off and put on an off white peasant type blouse with sleeves that had been her mother's in the 70's. She kept on her skinny, faded and torn jeans since they were fairly clean and she didn't have the time to figure out what to change into. She pulled off her hiking books and socks and slipped into some simple brown sandals as well and cursed herself later, noting her feet were a funny texture from the socks and tight boots. She hoped no one would notice.
She drove down the street until she saw the house Paul had described. She pulled over and parked on the street before turning off the car and taking a deep breath. Why was she so nervous? Probably because she remembered Rachel from high school and she was afraid Rachel would hate her. She was never mean to Rachel like some people were, but she never stuck up for her either.
She reached in the trunk and grabbed the glass pie plate. She had made a couple pies yesterday and had left one untouched for their older neighbor. She grabbed it on her way out figuring it was polite to bring something a long for the hostess. She wasn't sure how formal this was going to be. She looked in the rear view mirror quickly to make sure she didn't have anything on her face or her hair was too out of control before she got out of the car and walked up to the front door. She knocked gently and waited.

Rachael smiled up at Paul, "No, nothing." Only about a million questions. Leaning in she buried her face against his chest and inhaled, making her emotions calm down. She could stand there forever with Paul. When someone (Maya, most likely) knocked on the door, Rachael's shoulder stiffened. "Oh no." She whispered, "I'm a mess!" Looking around she noticed the kitchen was mess too. "Oh." She hurried over and got the dishes and pushed the all in the sink, quickly then used a rag to wipe down the counter. She had hamburgers about done cooking and potatoes about done as well.
"Get the door, please." She said as she ran to their bed room and pulled off his shirt and looked around for something nice to wear but it was warm in the kitchen and everything she had clean looked to hot. Sighing she grabbed another one of Paul's shirts (Which she secretly loved wearing) and put it on, so she was clean, and walked slowly back out to the main room, to wait for Paul to bring Maya in. Paul couldn't help but laugh at Rachael's little panic mode. "Don't worry Rach. You don't have to--" But she was already running around, trying to do what she could before their guest came. He chuckled, walking to the door and opening it. "Hey Maya," he greeted, giving her a brief hug before he stepped aside so that she was able to come in. He knew Rachael was already uncomfortable with this; he was not going to do anything to feed that discomfort. "Right this way," he said, leading her to where he knew Rachael was standing and waiting.
Here Goes . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
"Rachael, this is Maya. Maya, Rachael." He stood there, awkwardly, looking back and forth between the two of them. Forcing a smile on his face, even though this had the potential to be a disaster. He didn't feel the need to explain who the other was, they already had a general idea and he was not stupid enough to make an already awkward situation even more awkward. So he just stood there, watching the two of them, waiting for them to officially meet.

Maya almost jumped when Paul flung the door open but she smiled nervously holding the pie out with one hand while he hugged her again and then stepped aside. She followed him in looking around at the house as she followed him. It was cozy and comfortable.
When she saw Rachel she smiled warmly, trying not to show how nervous she was. Rachel had grown up since high school as well and had turned into a beautiful woman, even more so since she was visibly pregnant and had that pregnant mother glow that couldn't be ignored. Maya felt a tiny twinge jealously, hoping she too would be so lucky to be happily in a steady relationship with a child on the way. The older she got, the less likely it seemed.
"It's so good to see you again." She smiled referring to high school. She was sure their paths had crossed once or twice in school, but she couldn't remember specific conversations or anything. She realized she was still holding the pie and pushed it out toward her awkwardly. "Oh... I'm sorry. This is for you. Thank you so much for having me over." She said laughing a little. "It's um... blue berry." She said after she had handed it over.

Rachael watched Paul's ex walk in the felt a hit to her self esteem. Maya was still as beautiful as she had been in high school. She wondered again how close Maya and Paul had been, and tried not to dwell on it. "It's good to see you, as well." Rachael stood there awkwardly for a moment, "You have not aged a day." Rachael said softly, feeling very much like the shy high school she had been once upon a time. Maya handed over a pie and Rachael moved quickly forward to take it. "Thank you very much, we have have some after lunch." Which hopefully would not be bunted, but with the way Rachael felt today she couldn't promise it was even editable.
"I hope you came hungry, I normally fix a large lunch for Paul, so there is allot of food." Wolves ate allot, so if Rachael even made him a snack a pound of meat was involved. Rachael walked over and sat the pie down on the counter that served to separate the kitchen with the living room and dinning room. "Do you want anything to drink?"[/blockquote] ((Icons not of my own making. Credit goes to 'Leah' of MP.))

This was going well right? It seemed to be going well. Both of them seemed good . . . content . . . not quite comfortable . . . . maybe Paul was the one who was uncomfortable. He needed to say something and not stand there, observing the two women in the room all too carefully. "Yeah, my appetite has only gotten worse over the years. Imagine that?" There was a legitimate reason for that, but that subject was not one to be discussed right now. "You two will be lucky to get a slice of that pie," he said jokingly, letting out a small chuckle along with his words. He wasn't going to let this be awkward. He wanted these two women to get along, and he was going to do whatever he could do make it happen. He watched Rachael go over to the counter, and then turned back to Maya. "We got milk, juice . . . water of course. . . " He was just trying to fill any possible silence that threatened to ensue.

"Some water would be great." She said almost too eager as she moved to a chair at the table. Her mouth was getting dry from being nervous and water sounded amazing. She hoped he didn't sound like a total idiot for being overly enthusiastic. She took the water and took a glup feeling the cool water wet her mouth and ease her nerves a little. She put it on a napkin on the table and turned back to the kitchen where Rachel was now busy in the kitchen.
Feeling like she needed to say something she blurted "It was so funny to run across Paul on the trail." She realized that sounded funny and added "I mean you don't usually run across anyone out there." She shrugged. She glanced in Paul's direction, as if to say, is this going well? He looked nervous as well which brought back her nerves. She remembered why she never really had girlfriends and hoped she hadn't already killed this shot at a friendship. It was so important to her that Rachel liked her. She wanted to maintain her friendship with Paul now that she was back on the res and Rachel was the center of his life now, so if they couldn't get along who knows what would happen to her and Paul.

Rachael was moving around the kitchen trying to make sure everything was done, she could tell it would only take just a few more moments. "Paul enjoys walks." Paul enjoys walks? "He is always really physical." Ahh! "Hiking." She squeaked out. Nothing was coming out right, the first comment sounded silly by it's self, then next to personal and the last just plain lame. She turned so her back was to then as she knew she was going to blush. Blinking away a few tears of embarrassment she pulled the pan off the stove. "Just let me put these into some cooler bowels and we will be done."
Rachael quickly put the hamburgers on a plate, and the potatoes and chips in other bowels. She didn't ask Paul to get them, as she normally would, as she was trying to look as confidant as she could. "So, umm, Maya, how long have you been back in down for? Have you seen any of your old friends?" Rachael asked to be polite, even if Paul had told her some of the details.
