The Romanians are the original leaders of the vampire world. They were much larger than they are in the Twilight Saga. It is indicated they were harsh rulers and were not afraid to let everyone know. They did not have an appearance as the Volturi seem to have. They did not worry about appearing justified in their actions. They allowed humans to know about their existence. The exact reason is unknown, but perhaps they wanted humans to know about them, wanted them to fear them. Or perhaps they simply did not care what humans thought. Knowing they were better than they ever will be.

Not long after the formation of the Volturi coven did the Volturi attack. They took complete control. The Volturi destroyed the Romanian's coven as well as their castle. Allowing only the leaders to survive. It is also unknown why the Volturi allowed the Romanian leaders to live. Perhaps they wanted them to know how much powerful the Volturi will become. How much better they will be. This has caused a deep hate between the two covens. The Romanians have tried to gain their power back, but failed in the attempt. The Volturi continue to get more powerful while the Romanians continue to plan against them. They will be there if there is even the slightest hint the Volturi are going to be challenged. They will be sure to be there if the Volturi are ever defeated. They proved this in Breaking Dawn.
