This was one of the extremely rare moments that Jasper was without Alice. She, Rosalie and Esme had gone shopping, and Jasper . . . needed to hunt. The others seemed busy and not wanting to pose as an inconvenience -- and having felt a little embarressed --, he ventured to the outskirts of the city to find his prey. It did not take long to find a couple of deer to quench the thirst, though it never felt fully satisfactory. Regardless, it was adequate. It kept Jasper going. He knew he was the weakest one out of the group of them, and while they had been nothing but supportive . . . it was indeed humiliating. He had little self control when it came to his thirst, and being among humans was a constant struggle.
Still, he had found something that was incomparable to anything else: love. From the moment Alice had found him in the diner, he felt something, and somehow knew that his life would be drastically different, only this time for the better. He was unsure as to how he had functioned without her. The emotions she filled him with, not because of his ability but because he genuntely loved her, were ones that he had never experienced before . . . and knew he could not now live without. He had needed her without even knowing it. So for the first time in all his life, he had felt true happiness, for he had found it in her. They had just recently married with Carlisle and Esme's encouragement and they had a wedding with only their family, and whatever close friends Alice wished to invite. For Jasper had none -- with the exception of Peter and Charolette. He had left that life behind though he knew it would forever haunt his memory.
Jasper finished the last of his meal, knowing it would only fill him for a few hours. He rose to his feet, looking at the drained animal. This was far better than how he had devoured his previous meals. The emotions from those he had killed had overwhelmed him . . . and now, he no longer had to deal with such agonizing pain again. He was preparing to return to their home -- or perhaps meet up with Alice -- when something cause him to pause. A scent in the air. It was not a human; something far worse. Enough to make Jasper freeze, knowing he should run away yet needed to discover whether it was his own senses fooling him, or if it was indeed real. He had not smelled her for years . . . so many years. And he never wanted to encounter he again. Yet he slowly turned around, and his fear was confirmed.

There it was. That scent. The one she would never forget no matter how many thousand years might try to span between meetings. She smiled to herself, a hand raising up to brush her lips and trail over her chin, then neck, then breast, and rest on her belly. Oh yes, she knew his scent--even as off as it was. Turning she ran until she found him . . . Disgracing himself with an animal!
Her surprised eyes rose slowly up to meet his, though the action was quick for a human. THIS is why he left her? To . . . With ANIMALS?! How dare he?!! Maria moved closer, her sundress making her look like she floated as she first though to lift her hand to smack him. How dare he! She made him into the best and he mocked her now with . . . This . . . This perversion! Staring at him she waited for his excuse, because this was how it was between them. In the old days, he obeyed her every command--event he silent ones.

Jasper kept his eyes on her as she advanced toward him. It was not just her scent that filled him with familiarity, but also . . . her emotions. So many dark emotions. He could feel her shock, her annoyance, her disbelief at what he was now . . . a vegetarian. Whether she knew it was a full commitment or not, her next actions continued to reveal what he already felt from her. Her hand struck his face as he let the impact keep his head to the side. Years ago, he would have done everything within his power to appease her; to ensure she was never displeased or dissatisfied from him. But now, none of that mattered. In fact, he felt no offense at her actions. No remorse for having left her. This was the first confirmation he had that she was even alive since his departure from her.
He forced himself to remain calm, composed. All that Alice had taught him. All the good emotions she stirred in him. That was what he needed to remember right now, and not let Maria turn him back into what he used to be . . . though at this point, he doubted she could. He turned his head to look at her. The lust, passion and desire he had once felt for her was void from his eyes. "Maria," he greeted, or well acknowledged, his voice monotone. Had she sought him out, found him here? It was far too much of a coincidence for this to be a chance encounter. "What you seek, you will not find here." Him. Or well, the vampire that he used to be here. He would never rejoin her and her ruthless cause. And he wanted to make that explicitly clear.

What she sought out she would not find here? Clearly! The man who would have been the greatest warrior of their time . . . sucking on animals like a weakling. It was revolting, and insulting! She had trained him better, and had him at his highest and now he was weak and pathetic! His actions now reflected on her and she hated the sight of him.
Still, he had grown into a strong warrior before he left and Maria knew better then to attack him head on. When she brought him down, or forced him to return to her it would be with an army at her back and Jasper on his knees. "So arrogant to think I came here for you. Perhaps there is something else I am looking for. Something that is not disgracing himself with animals when he could be a king."
