In his wolf fur Sam is described as being horse-sized, having black fur, and being as quiet as a shadow. He has large incisors, is very swift, and it is said he has a grisly snarl.

Sam's father Joshua Uley was never around while he was growing up, so Sam lived alone with his mother. Through high school he dated Leah Clearwater. When Sam initially turned into a wolf he disappeared for a while, Leah and his mom searched for him. When he returned he could not tell either of them anything, despite this the relationship between the two of them. Though, when Leah brought her close cousin Emily Young down to visit in La Push, the relationship ended. Sam had imprinted on Emily.
Sam and Emily's relationship quickly blossomed, the two of them getting engaged sometime before the time New Moon took place. One night though, Sam's anger got the best of him and he accidentally hurt Emily. Severely scarring her face and body. To this day Sam has never forgiven himself for doing this, and still loves Emily unconditionally.
Sam was the first of the La Push teenage boys to turn into a wolf. He was all alone in his transformation. Sam was unsure of what had happened until he had visited Old Quil one day, shaking his hand. Old Quil immediately knew Sam had changed due to his body temperature. Old Quil and the other elders explained to Sam what had happened and what it all meant. As more boys matured and turned into their wolf forms, he took on the lead and led them trough the change. Explaining what had happened and what their job was now.
