What is life? It is the flash of a firefly in the night. It is the breath of a buffalo in the wintertime. It is the little shadow which runs across the grass and loses itself in the sunset. It was shortly after the funeral of Harry Clearwater as the words spoken by his friends and family still rung in Sue's ears. Beloved Husband. Beloved Father. Beloved Friend. Sue fought back the tears, for Charlie was just about to enter her house. He had been kind enough to walk her home, and even though it was not a far distance, Sue knew she would have had trouble entering this house once again. Especially now that Leah was missing. It felt so empty. Their house that was once filled, was now vacant, except for her
Seth was not here either. He wasn't ready to come home and she accepted that. Still, her life could not end with the death of her husband. She still had things to do, people to care for. She could not afford to absorb herself in the sadness. Though she felt as if it had not sunk in yet. She felt as if Harry was going to come home from work in a couple of hours...and she wanted to surprise him by making his favorite meal.
When she heard the door open, she snapped out of her thoughts, and lightly cleared her throat. She found herself standing in the kitchen, getting ready to cook something for dinner. "Would you like any tea or coffee Charlie? Maybe something to eat?" Yes. She was still in shock. It had not yet sunk in...and she feared that when it did, she would lose all control of her self; she would lose all stability.

Charlie's suit didn't fit. He was having trouble letting him mind stay on topic, which was Harry's service. He keep thinking of his suit, Bella, and all the summers they had gone fishing. All the summers, they wouldn't go anymore. Charlie had been going to take Billy home but that Sam Uley boy, stepped up and offered. Charlie decide he would make sure Sue was settled in before going on to check on Bella and Alice. That Edwin boy better now show up.
Once they were in side, Charlie looked around. Hmm. He was going to miss Harry. Harry had some of the best fish fry you could ever have, and he was one of the best of friends. Poor kids. Leah and Seth were Bella's age and younger. They much have been to upset to come today. Poor kids. "Now Sue, just sit down for a moment, and rest. Today was hard, and you shouldn't be worrying over me, when you've had such a hard day." He said trying to keep 'bossy' from his voice while having the authority of a cop.

"I'm fine Charlie." She had said that so many times today, but not a single time did she mean it. She felt numb from the inside, and was worried that she was not crying more. She knew it would come. Harry had been her life long companion, but she could not accept that she was never going to see him again; that he would soon be one with the earth. That his existence would only be a memory.
She put one some water for the coffee. "I hope Billy is doing alright." The three of them had been so close, best friends. Now, one of the trio was missing. Her husband. Her own best friend. "The ceremony was nice," she commented, trying to keep the shaking from her voice. She cut up a slice from one of the pies that someone had given her: grief food. She put it on a plate and handed it to Charlie.

Charlie wasn't big in emotional responses and he rarely showed any deep feelings as it made him feel uncomfortable. It was why he liked being a cop. You didn't need emotion. You but on your 'brave' face and got the job done. But there were times, when his actions showed how he felt rather then his words or face, and then there were times like this. When emotion was both expected and ok. He watched Sue for a moment before pulling up and into a hug. "Yeah, It was very nice. You were very brave." Poor Sue. Losing Renee had to have be easier. At lest she wasn't dead.

What is life? It is the flash of a firefly in the night. It is the breath of a buffalo in the wintertime. It is the little shadow which runs across the grass and loses itself in the sunset. Sue did not feel brave. She felt weak, but despite this, she would not admit it. She needed to be brave for Leah and Seth. Even though they weren't here, she still needed them to see her not fall apart. She put her arms around him, welcoming the friendly, comforting embrace. She would not talk about Harry right now. She couldn't say how much she missed him, and how helpless she felt right now. She did however, not restrain any tears and allowed a few of them to flow down her cheeks. She needed to pull away before she completely lost control of her emotions and poured them out on poor Charlie. As she pulled away, she sniffed, and wiped the tears from her eyes.
"Thank you for helping me with all the arrangements." Her voice was a little hoarse from choking back the tears, but she cleared her throat. "I really couldn't have done it on my own." Billy and Charlie had been amazing, and she knew they would. Seeing how close everyone had been.....when Harry was alive....
She turned to the counter, preparing to give him some food. She put some casserole in a plate and poured a cup of coffee for Charlie. She went back to get her own herbal tea. She then proceeded to put it on the table in front of him before taking a seat in the chair across. She cupped her hands around the mug, trying to let the warmth of the hot liquid warm her entire body, for it felt numb . . . it was as if she had no feeling inside of her, as if she had been frozen. She looked inside the light colored substance. "You must miss him a lot too. I'm sorry for your loss Charlie." So much for not talking about Harry, but how could she ever not have him constantly on her mind? From the moment she closed her eyes to sleep, from the moment she opened them would be the only time that she would not have to consciously think about him . . . and even then, she was certain he would consume her dreams.
