Jasper was doing something which he rarely did: shopping. His anniversary with Alice was near, not to mention Rosalie's wedding. He was running out of ideas for his adopted sister. She had so many weddings that it was difficult to be creative. And Alice . . . well, he did not have to try so hard with her because she often already knew what he was going to get her and usually liked and appreciated it. Rosalie was so much more difficult to please. He had no idea how Emmett dealt with buying her presents whether it was for their anniversary . . . birthday . . . Valentine's Day . . . Jasper was sympathetic towards Emmett indeed.
As he exited a store, still unsuccessful in locating the perfect gift for either woman, he saw a tear filled child looking directly at him. Not only that . . . but she was approaching him. Jasper could feel the abundant fear in her and immediately knew that something was not right. The child had been crying quite a bit and yet she still neared him.
Silently, she handed him a small note that she had gripped firmly in her hand . . . enough to cause the sheet to wrinkle in such a short period of time -- or what Jasper had assumed was a short period of time -- . He unfolded it and much to his surprise, the young child did not leave. She stood there. Still afraid, and tears uncontrollably streaming down her cheeks. Jasper did not question her presence. He focused on the note which he was given.
I'm a snack. Eat me.
The words on it were puzzling and filled Jasper's mind with questions. Did someone know he was a vampire? It was far too much of a coincidence for him to receive this note that could be taken literally. It was not by chance he was the one who had received it. Someone wanted him to read it. Then the possibility of this being some sick joke arose in Jasper’s mind. That possibility was shortly ruled out because he knew that his family would never do something like this. He knew they were supportive and would never taunt or tease him about his lack of self control.
He looked up from it, scanning the surrounding people passing by. The scent of each one was human. Each one . . . as tempting as the other. The small child in front of him . . . he would not do it. Never. He would not betray his family like that . . . he would not betray Alice like that. He looked away from the child, and continued to look around the small town.
“Who gave this to you?” He asked the small child, his tone was not filled with any empathy. He was not good at expressing his emotions in that way. The small child pointed to the woods . . . and this was where he would start. He had to focus. He began towards the woods, directing all of his attention on the mere smells, his heightened sense caught something. It was blood . . . human blood, and it was strong; too strong to still be contained within a human body. Wherever this smell was coming from . . . he needed to find it. Not so that he could drink whatever blood was exposed, but because following one clue to the next would lead him to understand this disturbing note.
He followed the scent, like a dog who caught a scent and obediently followed the trail. He departed further into the woods . . . sensing that deep within was where it was coming from, and he had been right for as soon as he concealed himself within the trees, the smell was stronger than ever. He had been too distracted to notice that the small child and run away . . . which was probably what she should have done. Exposing Jasper to this smell was like dangling a piece of meat in front of a famished lion: pure instinct tended to take over. He walked deeper . . . and deeper . . . the scent get closer . . . and closer . . . until finally, the trail was at an end for he saw the source of temptation. The pained human was lying on the ground . . . her blood spilled, staining the green grass and to a deep, blood red.
It was not this scene that had caught all of Jasper’s attention. It was another scent . . . a more familiar one and one which reminded him of all those years ago; the years which he had so desperately wanted to escape from; the time in his life where he had become a monster. She was here, and he knew it. He could not see her. Every voice of common sense in him was telling him to run away . . . to avoid contact with her. But, just like the time he had first encountered her, he could not move and was unwillingly forced into a frozen state.
Maria ------------ She was here. --- Tag Maria ---

Maria's deep chuckle filled the little area they were in. The woman on the ground, moaned in pain, crying out. She was turning. Still human and blood fill for the taking. "Jassspppeerrrr," She cooed and walked from behind some trees, very close to him, "Hello, my little lock of love." Dramatic pause, "You look good enough to eat." Another pause, "As always." Her words sound more like a purr then the musical chime most vampire's had.
"Did you enjoy your snack, Darling?" She asking wondering how true the rumors were. Rumors so shocking they had made it down south, and drew Maria up north. She wanted to see if her little toy solider had really been apart of that. "If not then give her a few days," Maria said glancing down at the turning mother, "And she will not even care it's her daughter I am feeding her."

Maria's presence had not truly been registered in Jasper's brain until she stepped out from concealment. Her melodic voice was unchanged . . . as were her actions of violence. He would have asked how she could have done something like this. How she could be so cruel. But he knew better. Maria had no sense of morality . . . she was inhumane. He knew Maria, and this . . . what she had done did not surprise her.
He took a step away from her. Oddly enough . . . there was still something very compelling about her. Perhaps it was due to the fact that she had been the very first vampire he had established a connection and bond with -- no matter how horrible that bond had made him -- . He felt no loyalty to her, but that did not mean he was drawn to her.
He had to shift his focus from the bleeding woman. What would be the better thing to do? Let her die . . . and become a bloodthirsty newborn. Or kill her before she reached that horrible stage and spare her the agony. He could not decide. He also had to put aside his selfish temptation of the blood that was going to waste . . . spilling on the ground . . . No! Jasper could not give in. Not with Maria here. He would not let her actions control him as they once had so long ago.
"Leave this place Maria. My family and I have established a peaceful life here. You are destroying what he had worked hard to achieve." It was more so Carlisle who had established this for them . . . but he wanted her to know that he had a family. That he did not need her. That he wanted her gone from here. It was still difficult for him to believe Maria was here . . . in Forks . . . with him. He would have been surprised that she had survived this long, but knew better than to doubt this ambitious vampire. It would take a great force to destroy her. She would not be perished that easily.

Maria let out a very pleased gasp of mock shock, which then turned to her deep chuckles. "Oh! Jasper! It IS true!" Maria licked her lips as if she needed to moisten them. "I heard rumors and had to see for sure if my little toy solder had done what they say!" She looked very pleased which should be a warning to everyone. Maria was pleased when she had a goal with in her grasp.
"Walking among humans. Marrying them! Breeding half breeds! Defining the Volturi!! Oh! My personal favorite, your new pets!" She purred the last words. Maria moved closer to him, knowing once he liked her close. She had heard of his silly little mate, and did not care. She was not here to drag Jasper back to her bed. No. Jasper once again was the took she needed most.

He did not particular like the term 'toy soldier'. It insinuated that she still had some authority over him. She did not. Not any more. Now, Alice was the one his world revolved around. Maria had been the one he once worshiped . . . but things had changed, and he would never allow her to pull him back into that vengeful way of life. Being near her reminded him . . . it was not just a visual reminder: it went deeper than that. Jasper felt the emotions he had once felt from her. They were all so angry and filled with violence. They were what influenced him once -- apart from her manipulation. She was very good at doing that.
He took another step away from her. It may have looked odd to a person passing by. It was almost as if they were circling around a dying woman . . . yet the dying woman was not the object of focus.
"I see some things have not changed. You are still the same Maria that I had left so many years ago." He was of course, referring to the way she spoke and the emotions that filled her. He chose to ignore and make no comment on all the other remarks she had said.

She chuckled as if he was being funny as she keep moving closer to him. "And I see my little toy soulder has changed." She make a tsk tsk sound, "Living off of animals and not human blood." Pause. "Scandalous!" She chuckled again. "Oh Jasper, Jasper, Jasper. I see you barly the soulder I made you to be. You could have, had it all. Power, land, blood."
"Yet I find you here. . . Wasting your talents and playing with humans!" Maria's face grew serious and hurt. "You did not call upon me to witness for you." Then her face brighten and she laughed musically as if that was what she thought of that idea.

Jasper did not share her humor in this situation, so he continued to step away. Ignoring her comments was as difficult as trying to maintain a distance between them. He remained silent . . . having nothing to say in return at the moment. He would have just stayed silent the whole time, but he wanted her gone from here. He wanted her to leave Forks . . . no, he needed her to leave Forks.
"I have established a life here. More of one that I had when I was with you. I am happy Maria. I was never happy with you." He was driven by her emotions and her manipulation . . . and his overall weakness, but he was never truly happy. "Leave Forks. There is nothing for you here. There is no benefit for you if you stay." He paused, creating a silent interval between his words. "I would never have willingly contacted you again." It was a response to her 'hurt' remark about not calling her to witness. He had not even considered it . . . and with good reason.

"Oh, ooo." She made a fake wounded sound. She moved closer still and reached out a hand to touch him, as if she was going to caress him, like in the old days. "My toy solder sound put out with little ol' me."
She wasn't going to tell him her plan for him yet. She was going to show him why he better side with her coming up. "I even brought you a gift." Maria paused, and leaded her head closer, "Did you enjoy your snack? You used to like the snacks I brought you home. Quick bites for the road before hunting."

Her forward attempt only encouraged her further to keep a distance between them. He did not let her touch him. He kept moving away . . . hoping it would make the difference by not letting her get close enough to him so that he could feel everything he had once felt. He was in more control now . . . but the feelings would be too familiar and he never wanted to experience them again.
"I do not . . . share the same diet as you anymore Maria." He looked at the woman in the middle of the ground. What was he to do? Should he end her suffering now? Or bring her home to their family? It was not safe . . . he looked back at Maria knowing there would be a time to deal with that issue. One thing at a time. "I am not that man anymore. You should leave." He was using all his effort to keep his voice composed. He could still be that man . . . the one who would be more than happy to indulge once in a while . . . the one who would not mind drinking human blood. Jasper was still the weak one, but he could not let her know that.
"It took some time to break out of the habit. But I will not weaken and give in to it." It almost sounded as if he was trying to convince himself as much as he was Maria.

Maria could do this all day. She thought, Jasper's reactions where a good sign. Oh yes! This would go her way. When he moved back again and again, she crept closer and closer. She let out her deep chuckle and and moved quicker. "You were always, that vampire." Maria said, "I just let you be who you were meant to be, who my little lock of love wanted to be."
Maria made a quick lunge and managed to close the distances between then, wrapping her arms around one of his. "Lets not talk, about unfriendly times. This is a new world. Lets go walk among the humans."

The calm demeanor he struggled to uphold was because of her ferocity. Without Alice . . . or any of the other Cullens her . . . he knew it was going to very difficult indeed to keep his composure, especially with the scent getting stronger and stronger as it more violently burned his dry throat. He looked at her as she closed the distance between them. If he could feel chills, he was certain one would have made his way down his spine when she touched him. It was all too familiar . . . a familiarity that he did not want to experience again.
He broke from her hold and went back to the opposite side, directing his gaze to the woman who was suffering. It was cruelty . . . he had been a part of this cruelty before. "Leave Maria." He would not yell, but his voice was becoming increasingly stern and lack the admiration that had once consumed it. "Forks is not the place for you. You create too much attention for yourself." Though he was reiterating himself, he knew that she was far too stubborn to comply. There was a very specific reason she was here . . . and she was not going to leave until she got her way.

She chuckled again and followed him still. "Come my little toy soldier, and walk with me. I will behave. Show me this new experience and with your dull life I will grow bored and leave you." After she got what she wanted. "You might as well come and keep me in check. You know how I get naughty, when I am left alone to plot." She looked down at the screaming, bloody woman they were walking around. "I might think to leave her with a few friends. You don't want that. You better come and keep an eye on me."

There was absolutely no way he was going to bring her into his life . . . introduce her to his family . . . he did not even have an ounce of trust as far as she was concerned. He would not endanger Alice like that. "State your business here." He did know however that he could not leave her wandering around town on her own. Who knows what trouble she would cause. Jasper was out of options.
He looked at the woman and possibilities raced through his mind. He could not drink her blood . . . he could not turn into what Maria had once made him. He would not let her influence him in such ways. She had no control over him. These thoughts were difficult to convince himself of . . . but he had no other choice.
The other option was to take this woman back home . . . but that would bring Maria to his family -- to Alice -- and he could not do that. But he could not let the woman transform and become a new born in Forks. That would cause too much attention. Jasper did what he thought was safest for everyone . . . he did not know if he made the right choice . . . but he made a choice. He would end her suffering.
He looked around the woods and picked up a large stick would had a pointed edge. He then approached the woman, and crouched beside her. Taking a moment . . . he took a deep breath as he inhaled the sweet smell of her blood. He closed his eyes, allowing the mere scent to consume him as it would be his only chance. Before he gave in to the temptation and allowed himself to break under the painful pressure of this situation, he inserted the stick into the woman's heart. The strength was enough to penetrate the human's vital organ, but it did not look as strenuous as it actually was. It was done rather smoothly -- if one could use such a word to describe such a violent action -- .
And seconds after . . . seconds which seemed longer than usual, the woman ceased her cries of pain. Her movement began to decline until it lay there idly on the ground, completely motionless. Jasper looked at her before pulling the stick from her chest. His next course of action only further proved how insensitive he could be in such a situation. He began to tear the body apart, keeping the limbs close together so that when he started the fire, each body part would burn quickly and would not prolong the murder he had committed so that it would attract attention from a curious wanderer.
Once again . . . Maria had brought out the monster in him.
As he watched the fire burn, his eyes were empty, concealing any sympathy though he felt it within him. He had felt that woman's pain from the moment he let out her first cry, to the moment she let out her last. He had caused some of that pain . . . though he tried to make it as quick as possible. That was no excuse for his monstrous act. He had killed her. How would Alice react to this? He was trying to protect her . . . how successful would he be if Maria did not leave once she got what she wanted? He needed to make her visit as short as possible. And so, while standing there and waiting for the fire to diminish, he also waited for her to respond to his command . . . the only words he had said to her during this process.

Maria's deep, musical and pleased chuckled filled the silence. She had just watched him work, knowing the actions would remind him of their past. "Ooohhh, Such a waste. One never knows when one might find something grand-or tasty-on the road to somewhere." She was reminding him of the night she found him on the road and turned him. "Sometimes they hold, all sorts of potential." The last work holding double meaning to 'rewardings' and ways to earn rewards.
"Now that you have cleaned up my mess," Which was part of his job when he was with her, "Lets go play with the humans and look for more potential."

He ignored her remarks . . . though it was becoming increasingly difficult. He had wished he could have at least taken a small sip . . . but no. All he could think of was his wife being extremely disappointed with him. And to prevent that, anything was worth it. Now . . . he just had to get rid of one more pest. One more thorn in his side, stabbing him repeatedly.
"Stop speaking in playful words Maria. State your business here. What is it that you exactly want?" He did not want to beat around the bush . . . he wanted answers as quickly as possible, but it was never easy to get those from Maria. Especially since she was the ony who liked to be in charge and did not take well to orders and demands.

"Stop using playful words? Would you rather my actions spoke for me? Another thing I seemed to remember you enjoying. Me." She chuckled, "Your right of course, I must want something. However you should know you get nothing free." She reminding her.
"I gave you immortality, and made you who you are today. I chose to let you go when you left and not hunt you down." Mainly because she thought he would kill her. "I now want, to walk down the street, and look at the humans, and talk." She picked up the sunglasses that the woman had worn and put them on. They looked very out of place on her face. "Shall we?"

Immortality. There was only one good thing that had come out of his immortality. "I did not ask for it Maria. You did what you wished for selfish motives. I have no debt to you." He owed her nothing . . . he would not even go as close to say that if it weren't for Maria, he would not be married to Alice. He could never see anything this vampire did as good.
"State your terms." Allowing Maria to walk freely among the humans was like unleashing a hungry lion right in front of a herd of deer. He could not let her walk among humans . . . not in Forks where the small town atmosphere would make her stick out like a sore thumb. "Very well." He waited for her to walk first so that he would not take his eyes off of her for a second. "After you." He did not express any affection in the way he offered her to take the first step. It was merely a safety precaution.

"After . . . me?" Maria repeated slowly, "Now, now Jasper dearest. What happened to that southern gentlemen that used to be so sweet to me?" She chuckled, "Come not my little lock of love, you know what I want. Don't make me beg. At lest not so soon in our reunion. We have yet to really enjoy our selves. Begging can come later, when we are in a more horizontal agreement."
She wanted him to take her arm and walk her around like they used to. Not because she missed it but because she knew it would annoy him, maybe even hit his pride. She was working on bring him down slowly.

"I can not represent such a false portrayal." They were not friends, not even close. While Jasper was a patient man, it was wearing thin. Already since she arrived, she created a situation where he felt he had no choice but to end another’s life. He knew this was just the one of many things she would do to get to him . . . and not in the way it used to be. He could feel how bitter she was over the fact that he had left her, and that bitterness was not being put to good use.
Jasper was also not oblivious to the fact that he did not exactly have to play fair. There was a reason that he had been such an important asset to her army. If she was not going to listen . . . well, he was just going to make her listen. "I repeat, after you Maria. Do not waste time."

"I have an eternity to waste." Maria said with a smug smile and stood there perfectly content in waiting him out. Not worried one little bitty bit about how this would end. She have her way, and she would make him see that it was pointless to fight her. She wasn't here to play a game with him, she was here to win it.

"Do not be so quick to forget what I can do Maria." He did not say it in a boastful manner . . . he was in fact reminding and warning her of his gift. "I can make this meeting go along much more quickly, but I am giving you the opportunity to decide that for yourself." His offer would not stand for long.

Maria smirked and crossed her arms. He could make her feel any way he wanted but if one thought about it hard enough, they could still control there actions. They just had to use enough energy. He could make her feel the need to hurry and no matter how it killed her she would stand here. It would kill her. But she would do it. "Jasper." She said in a sharp playful tone. "You know, Mommy don't like to repeat her self."

Jasper was not pleased. He hated that she was treating him like a child . . . that she was treating him how she always had: like a tool. "Is this amusing to you Maria? Is this the ultimate revenge that you have come back to claim? If this is the extent of your plan then it is most certainly a pathetic one. If you have a greater plan, then you are simply wasting time conversing in this manner, instead of starting the path to your victory, which I am sure is influenced by your arrival here at Forks." Whether her plans for victory involved him or not . . . he did not know for sure, but he could make an educated guess.

Maria simply held her smile and tilted her head, and waited. She was not going to repeat her self again but she was ready to wait him out. He would break down her Jasper. She knew he would. He would always go back to that vampire he was in the early days. He would get anger and annoyed but he would do it, because he was simpler. If she had been anyone else, he would have killed her, but she knew her Jasper was sentimental and tired of killing. He would offer his arm, sooner or later and she would take it.

Her silence encouraged his own. He stood there, looking at her. He was waiting for her to make the first attempt to move forward, however he knew that she was waiting for the same thing. He folded his hands behind his back -- a typical formal, military stance -- . His back was straight and he slightly raised his chin. By putting his hands behind his back, he was illustrating the fact that he was not going to offer his hand to her. He did not want to be any nearer to her than he had to be. So he just stood there . . . and waited.

Maria chuckled a very short half laugh when he did so. So it came down to a test of wills. He had not even tried to use his powers on her, just his silence. Well well, somethings never changed. Jasper had always been the silent deadly type. He had not been one to talk about nothing which suited Maria wonderfully. When Aro or guest showed up he had been silently guarding her. Even when they were rolling around in bed he had been more silent then others.
Maria let her self think of it, and others. Letting her mood shift and grown as she did. Let Jasper this this was turning her on, maybe it would annoy him. ha ha.

Jasper grew highly uncomfortable with the emotions emanating from Maria, but his expression nor his position showed any signs of discomfort. He had frozen in place. He was not trying to prove anything, other than the fact that he was not under her command any more . . . that he was not going to protect her anymore . . . that he was not going to help her any more.
He just continued to look ahead . . . being reminded of everything he was and everything he had done. He could stand here and stare at her all day -- and not in a romantic sense. He would just have to block out her . . . strange emotions.

Maria was thinking of all the dirty and naughty things in her past. She stood there, silently, letting her mood change into one that he could not ignore. It would be hard for him to miss knowing what she did of his powers. She chuckled as one memory came to mind. "Do you remember that first snack I gave you? Or the little Mexican girl out side of Sana Fay?" Maria asked, chuckling still.
"Do you remember what we did to her that night?" Maria licked her lips. "Training exercises we called it, but I think we both knew it was something more. They way her heart beat faster as we toyed for hours with her." Maria took in a deep breath and sighed it out. "I still think of it, we had been practicing holding back our hunger around humans, and me did the most naughty things to her, to test our resistance. So much wasted blood that night. She lasted far longer then I thought she would."
"I have told my newest pet about that night. We have tired to find good little girls to recreate it but, sadly he is so strong and he kills them to fast. He likes them to fight back, anyway." Maria's head tiled and she pretended to this. "Hmmmm." Her smiled didn't fade, but it changed. Instead of pleasant and horny it was plotting and threatening. "Perhaps I should reintroduce your wife to him. She seemed the type to . . . .fight back." She was taunting him, trying to make him to tell her to just shut up and then give in to get this over with.

Jasper was not comfortable at all with the emotions that were being produced by . . . whatever she was thinking -- he could only guess, though he did not even want to do that. Her words distracted him though, as he did not expect her to break the silence with saying what she did. Then again, when was Maria ever predictable. He listened . . . painfully. As soon as she said the words 'Little Mexican girl outside Sana Fay' , he knew exactly what she was talking about. How could he forget that? It had been such a horrible, gruesome, violent attack on her. No, it was more than just an attack. They tortured her for pure amusement. They made her endure extreme pain, just to see if she could. There were many things Jasper was not proud of as far as his past was concerned and that was one of them.
The emotions he felt from her had been unbearable, but they had been concealed with the hostility that he had felt with Maria, and while doing it he had thought nothing of it. He had watched her, bleed, cry out in pain . . . and Jasper did nothing. After spending his human life protecting women, he had done something as horrible as that. Hearing Maria say this brought up all the emotions that he had felt when carrying out the brutal task. All he needed was someone to mention that night, and all those deep seated emotions that he had forced away, re surfaced. If his hands were not folded behind his back, one would be able to see them trembling. He kept his face expressionless . . . he was using all of his strength to control himself for he could not let her get to him again. But that girl . . . that young, innocent girl who they had killed for no reason, not even to feed on but for pure entertainment . . . . . Jasper could never forgive himself for that.
Despite his utmost effort to control himself, Maria's continuing speech destroyed those efforts. He was going to ignore her, block out her words . . . but once she mentioned a particular vampire's name, he could not help it. Something inside of him finally snapped. After hearing all her words, and dealing with her for so long . . . he had finally lost the calm that he struggled to maintain. Hearing her speak like that about Alice, and threatening her in such a way . . . imagining her as that young Mexican girl that they had tortured so brutally . . . Jasper could not stand there and act as if that did not upset him. He lost full control of himself in that moment.
In less than a second after Maria spoke, he charged at her as fast as his vampire speed would allow him, and with all his enhanced forced, pushed her forward. It was an impulsive act, but one that he did not regret in that moment. He watched her fall back, and his stance no longer demonstrated his decision to remain calm and simply stand there in a formal stance. No. His position now became defense. He was defending himself, and contemplating attacking her again when she stood up. An angry growl emitted from deep within his throat. This was not the Jasper that had come to Forks . . . this is not the Jasper that existed after leaving Maria . . . all of that serenity that he had tried to keep, vanished, and he looked at her with a murderous glare, feeling as if he could rip her apart, limb from limb. If this was why Maria came here . . . she had succeeded.

Maria had not come 'here' for 'this'. In fact it was so far the opposite of what she wanted, that she had not been ready to defend her self. She was in a mild shock when he did it. She had never seen him react so. Over a little girl! Maria hissed a warning but Jasper appearnlty took no heed. When Jasper attacked, she used an old trick in the book, and took it in order to counter it. Once he was away she moved swiftly and jumped on his back, as if to rip his head off.
