They had been in his house for three days and while Carlisle had grown to accept them he still did not know them. They were such an odd yet lovable pair. One was small, and hyper and talked about everything, and took over yet made you feel safe around her, as if you didn't have to wonder what she was really thinking. She told you, and trusted you and you had no choice but to return the favor.
It was the male that Carlisle needed to get to know. Jasper was his name, and he was silent and formal. Which was fine, but it made it hard to get to know him while his mate, Alice was around. He wasn't sure about leaving him alone with Esme in the house, even after Edward telling him that Jasper had no thoughts toward hurting any of them. Carlisle would still like to get to know Jasper on his own, with out Alice around.
So he took him hunting.
((For Jasper, and later for Alice if she is of a mind to))

The past few days for Jasper had been . . . interesting. He had come here obliviously with Alice upon meeting her for the first time. And to be honest, she was the only one he really trusted. There was a large family of vampires here . . . and they were a kind he had never encountered before. Not only were they extremely caring (as far as Jasper could tell) but they were . . . vegetarians. Who would ever have thought there was such a thing as vegetarian vampires. Though Alice had spoke a bit about it, it was still surprising to Jasper.
Regardless, he felt somewhat comfortable here. The other vampires residing in this house were not like Maria and those he had come to know in the past. They were kinder . . . less hostile, and he could sense their kindness. It was a comforting feeling, to be around such vampires. For a change, he did not feel anger and vengeance. Then again, he had grown used to the lack of those emotions when he had spent time with Alice, prior to arriving here.
Still . . . the constant thirst Jasper felt was difficult to endure. He thirsted for blood. Not animal blood; human blood. Animal blood did not give him the satisfaction that human blood did, and so he wondered how he could ever live his life surviving on a vegetarian diet. Right now, it seemed impossible. He lacked so much self control.
Carlisle, the head of the family and probably the kindest one -- other than Esme -- had offered to take him hunting. While Jasper was slightly reluctant, he was extremely hungry too. How could he ever turn down an offer to eat? He met Carlisle outside, prepared for their little hunting trip . . . wondering if Alice would be joining them. He really had not done much without her. He had come with her, and wished to remain with her. He felt she was part of him now.
He looked at Carlisle, ready to go and still curious. "Will Alice be joining us Sir?" He asked him politely. His formalities caused him to call Carlisle 'Sir' . . . at least for the time being. He was still new here . . . Carlisle had opened up his home to him, not sure what to expect from such a violent vampire as himself . . . Jasper had a great respect for the doctor.

"Please, call me Carlisle." He said trying to make the boy relax. Granted, out of everyone in the house, Jasper was the 2nd eldest, but Carlisle was simply thinking of Jasper in the least threatening way. The only reason he knew Jasper's age was from Alice. Who had not told Carlisle anything else of Jasper's past.
His eyes were gold, that was a good sign. It made Carlisle calmer about this. Edward seemed to think they were safe to be around and that was a plus. "We tend to hunt only in areas with large predators. Emmett and Edward are hunters more then some of the rest of us. Emmett likes this area more so because of the bears." It was random conversation, meant to try to put them at ease. Carlisle didn't know of Jasper's power.

Carlisle. That would take some getting used to. While he wanted to remain respectful, he did not want to go against what the vampire requested. "Very well . . . Carlisle," he commented politely. He felt the calmness from Carlisle. Though Jasper spend the past two years with Alice, he still welcomed any emotion of relaxation and serenity. Jasper listened attentively as he learned more about the family which was apparently now his. According to Alice, they were going to live with them forever. Her gift never ceased to amaze him.
"What do you prefer hunting?" He asked. At the moment, Jasper did not have a preference. Anything with blood worked for him. The question was asked not only because Jasper was curious, but also because he wanted to make an effort to get to know this vampire. After all, he had just explained Emmett and Edwards preferences . . . he was telling him about his family.

Carlisle gave a light shrug. "It would depend on who I was hunting with. My wife would not hunt a bear, for example. Rosalie is a good hunter, and could take a bear down, but dose not find the enjoyment my sons do." Carlisle smiled remembering Rosalie telling him she'd kill a bear, stole the bear's supper, carried it over a hundred miles and wanted him to turn supper into a vampire. It was a story for later. "My sons find the challenge of hunting, adds to the meal. It helps them handle the needs."
"What would you like to hunt?"

"Oh. I see." Jasper thought about it. It made sense. The challenge of the hunt . . . made it better. With Alice, they would just hunt what they could since they were on the move. Jasper wondered if that would help him. If finding something challenging to hunt would make consuming it . . . more satisfactory. Maybe he should try to hunt something difficult.
"I am not sure. Most of what I have hunted has been deer, as it was the most abundant in the areas Alice and I had roamed through." He paused, thoughtful for a moment. "What animals other than bear do you hunt here?"

Carlisle gave him a reassuring smile, "Edward likes the mountain loins." He said with a smile, "It challenges him with there speed, and quickness. Emmett likes bears because they are stronger and--well Edward thinks he never got over that first bear." Carlisle chuckled, and wondered if that makes since. "Why don't we walk that way and we can see what sort of challenge we can find?"

"First bear?" Jasper obviously was not familiar with the family's history . . . and he was fairly certain that they had quite a bit of it. After all, Carlisle was centuries old. Jasper was certain he had a lot to teach and the stability and the way this family lived . . . there was no animosity between them, no hatred . . . it was pleasantly shocking. He followed Carlisle's lead. Following him cluelessly as he was still very unfamiliar with this area. Jasper did indeed have so many questions, but he reminded himself not to irritate the doctor to the point of irritation . . . and so he asked him one thing at a time. And right now, he was asking him about Emmett's first bear.

Carlisle smiled. "Emmett's story is one of my favorite to tell about how my children came to be with my family." (Mainly because until this point, it was the only one; one day he would no doubt, enjoy telling about how Jasper & his Alice found them.) Carlisle spoke of them as children but did not mean they were kids, more just his sons and daughter...daughterS now he guessed.
"Emmett was out hunting in the mountains of Tennessee when he was attacked by a bear. From what I hear, it was taking it's time toying with our Emmett before the bear would eat him." Carlisle did not like to think of the pain Emmett went thought, or any of them but, Emmett at lest did not remember. "Rosalie found him."
"She fought and killed the bear," Which was why a few moments ago, he had said he knew Rose could take down a bear, "Then carried him over a hundred miles to me. Asking me to save him, by changing him."
"I am not sure, what she saw in him to make her go though such a journey. I would never have even guessed, that she would do such a thing; can't image how hard it was for her. She was only two years old at the time. The smell of blood had to be hard on her but she wanted him more then a meal. They have been together ever since."
He chuckled as they walked. "I am talking so much. You must forgive me."

Jasper lightly smiled at the story. "Rosalie defeated a bear at two years of age?" Though it would not surprise him too much, especially since he has had his fair share of vampires and an understanding of their strength . . . it was just difficult to picture Rosalie, a woman of her appearance, to have tackled a massive bear . . . to save a man like Emmett. Fascinating indeed.
"They seem very close," he said, stating the obvious. He could sense what they were feeling . . . passion, love, extreme devotion . . . it was what Jasper felt for Alice. "If you do not mind my prying . . . did you change all of your family?" Jasper had not been dying or been close to death when he was changed. He just encountered three beautiful women and then next thing he knew, was a blood thirsty monster.
"Not at all Carlisle. I enjoy learning more about your family. Alice and I, we came so unexpectedly." Well, unexpectedly to the Cullens. "You welcomed us with such hospitality. I am grateful." Truth was, Jasper was relieved Carlisle spoke a lot. Jasper was the opposite. Usually he could get away with it too since Alice was often around, talking away. But now . . . it was just Jasper and Carlisle. Jasper would have to move outside his comfort zone in order not to be rude. And truthfully, he was enjoying his conversation with the vampire. He was not used to have such light discussions. The emotions from Carlisle . . . the calmness, the kindness, the love for his family . . . were all so soothing that Jasper did not mind being near him.

Carlisle smiled when Jasper seemed surprised about Rosalie's actions. "Yes, we were all very surprised our selves. Not so much about the bear, but about wanting Emmett...." He trialed off. "I might as well warn you, if you have not noticed yet. It's hardest on Rosalie, with what we are."
"Your not prying." He assured Jasper. "Yes, I did. Edward first. He was dieing of the Spanish flu. I was lonely and weak, but he seemed to accept it. Esme, I had known when she was a child, and then found her after she fell from a cliff." He wasn't going to share her full story. "Rosalie came later. She was dieing as well, from...physical trauma. Two years later, Emmett joined us. He took 'what we are' the best. He seemed almost to ok with it. It is why I like his story best. It gave me hope that it would help Rosalie, and his beginning started with love." He said but with a smile. Esme and His had too but, her pain over the lost of her baby had been so strong, it hurt Carlisle to remember her sadness and his having no way to help her.
"How did you and Alice come to be together." Carlisle asked. "Forgive me but, meeting two others like us, with the same feelings as to diet is rare enough, to find one such as Alice...." Her 'gifts' still amazed Carlisle and confused him.

His lingering sentence raised curiosity in Jasper but not enough to make him pry further. It was clearly a piece of information that Carlisle had purposely withheld. He was not going to push him. He just gave a short nod. "Thank you for the warning." He would definitely take that into consideration when communicating with Rosalie. He had not spoken to her much . . . mostly because she did not seem very friendly. The emotions he felt from her were not the same as the ones he felt from Carlisle, or Esme, or even Alice. He was fine being around the three of them [especially Alice] but Rosalie, Emmett and Edward he was still hesitant to be around.
As he listened to each individual story about why Carlisle changed them, Jasper was in awe. This vampire was more humane than he initially thought. "You saved them." It was more a moment of realization than a question. Despite his loneliness, he waited until someone was facing death before turning them into a vampire. Jasper wished he had been turned that way. Perhaps then he would not have been thrown into such a violent and morbid lifestyle. If he had been turned by Carlisle, and taught by Carlisle . . . his life would have been very different. "How long have you been with Esme, if you do not mind my asking." He felt he was bombarding Carlisle with so many questions. He just could not help himself.
Jasper paused before answering his next question, his lips slowly forming into a small smile. "She found me actually. It was as abrupt as our arrival here. She knew my name, and seemed to expect me. Her . . . gift, enabled her to see me in her future, and to see us traveling to you so that we could join your family." Alice was his hope. His second chance. His life. "It was in the most random of places. A diner actually." Once again he paused, thinking about this new diet he had embraced. "To be honest, I had never heard of this vegetarian diet. But Alice convinced me of it. I was drawn to her. I felt compelled to follow her anywhere." Her emotions drew him to her . . . and he did not regret a single moment he spent with her. He was also hesitant to tell Carlisle about his violent past . . . about his ability that made him feel the pain he put other people through -- even if they were just mere humans. He pulled himself out of his thoughts.
"How long have you been a vegetarian vampire?" Even the word vegetarian sounded so odd in this context. But he asked to give himself hope that one day . . . he would be accustomed to it. Jasper was not sure if he would ever utterly be content with it. But Alice was confident in him and Jasper trusted her.

Carlisle smiled at Jasper's story. "Ahh, so we were not the only ones sweep off our feet." He teased, but also seemed to mean it. Alice seemed to have that way about her. If you listed her qualities they would not seem very pleasant. Alice made them more then pleasant.
"Esme and I have been together since 1921." He smiled, "I love her very much." When Jasper had said 'you saved them', Carlisle disagreed but did not say so out loud. He felt guilt. He might have, but what if he hurt them more then saved them?
"I have never bit a human to feed. So, all my life." Carlisle answered, "I could not bring myself to hurt them. To waste a whole human life for a meal."

"Not at all. She has a very jovial personality." It was difficult for anyone not to be taken by her. She was so happy and spread that happiness to other . . . no matter how cheesy that may sound, it was rather true. 29 years. Jasper knew that when a vampire found a mate, they would love that vampire unconditionally forever. "You two seem very happy." They looked happy, and they felt happy.
Jasper could not help but detect guilt from Carlisle. Guilt for . . . turning them? He would not question it. Clearly, he did not tell him for a reason. Jasper was not going to use his ability to invade his privacy . . . even though it was a little late for that. Jasper would at least have the respect and dignity not to act like he knew just how Carlisle felt, and vocalize that knowledge.
"That must have been hard. The temptation is very great. And to be alone when first turned must have made it increasingly difficult." Now, it was Jasper's turn to feel guilty. The way he spoke about humans . . . and the way Jasper had not cared how many he killed and fed from. How could he have lived so long, oblivious to the suffering of others? It was disgusting of him. If Carlisle knew the whole truth . . . would he let him stay? "I did not have the same control." He felt he owed this vampire some honesty . . . after all, it was not highly unusual for a vampire to lack that self control.

Carlisle gave him a kind smile, "Nor did Emmett. He had trouble with the rules. I think he plays along more for us then his own self." He said it so Jasper would not feel as bad for hunting humans. He had no idea about Jasper's real past. "It was temping but, It helped that I knew most of the people. I ended up feeding on some deer. Edward was the first blood I tasted."
"Alice and your self speak very little of your past, more so from before you two meet. Do you mind if I asked how old you are?" It was a safe question to get them started talking about Jasper, he hoped.

That did comfort Jasper a bit. It gave him some hope that we would eventually adjust to this way of life. "Was it not hard . . . to simply bite them and not go further?" Jasper almost hesitated before asking the question, but his curiosity was great. "I apologize, if that is too personal a question to ask. I just have never met a vampire with such great self control." He had an immense admiration for Carlisle and it only grew the more he talked to him.
Once again, Jasper was reluctant. But . . . he owed him an explanation about how he came here. Why he really chose this way of life. How he escaped Maria's wrath. "Physically or literally?" He asked, jokingly. "Physically, I am 20 years of age. That is how old I was when I was turned. But I am really 107 years old." That was old indeed.

"Any question asked in honesty is not a bother to me Jasper. I think we both are trying to understand each other. Nether of us have Alice's gift of knowledge." He teased them both. "Yes, it was hard. Edward was the hardest, since he was my first. Emmett too, then smell of the hunt and blood was very strong. It was why Rosalie carried him so far to me. She did not think she could do it her self."
"That makes you the eldest of the others here. I was changed in 1663, but the rest are not quite as old." Carlisle wondered about something else, "I did not want to ask Alice this, since I got the impression that, she is unsure her self. How old is Alice?"

Jasper gave another small smile. His positive attitude was so contagious . . . Jasper could do nothing but embrace his optimism and understanding. "Quite true." Would now be a good time to tell him? He was still a little uncertain. He would wait for a better opportunity. Perhaps first he would find out if any of the other Cullens had any sort of gifts. "And to think, that you did it four times." Jasper quickly gave him an apologetic look . . . a slight change from the frozen strain on his almost expressionless face. "It takes great strength to do that. It is very admirable."
So he was one of the oldest then. Carlisle was centuries old, it surprised Jasper while at the same time it did not really. He seemed like a very wise vampire. It took years and years to gain that kind of insight. "Alice does not remember a lot about her previous life. She believes that she was born around forty-nine years ago, but it is not certain." Jasper almost wished he could have that same uncertainty . . . almost.

Carlisle thought about that for a moment while they walked. He felt sad for Alice, and wanted to help her if she would allow him to. Help her learn what she could about her self. He would have to make a point to seek her out and see what he could do.
"It must not be something very good. The mind blocks out what it needs to in order to keep going." He had a bit of worry in his tone. "I am glad she has you to help her, should she remember and need help dealing with it."
Carlisle seemed to be watched Jasper closely. Then thinking hard about something. While his emotions were, a bit worried for Alice, and excited about the hunt, there was a little spark of curiosity that was there as well.

"Suppressed memories. Though I can only imagine her frustration in not being able to understand where she came from. Though, as you can see, she copes with it quite well." Regardless of her empty past, she was definitely the most happy person he had ever met in his entire life. "I believe she has come to the perfect place . . . here with your family. She is ecstatic to be here." His array of emotions made Jasper desperately want to comment on them . . . but he held his tongue. "Do any of the others here . . . have special abilities?"

"Like Alice? Yes..." He trialed off knowing this made some people slightly uncomfortable. "Edward can read people's thoughts. You need not worry, he will not gossip about anything he hears. He only shares things if he feels it's a must." Carlisle watched Jasper waiting to see how he would react to knowing Edward knew everything he was thinking.
"The rest of us, are normal for our kind. . . As normal as we get, any way." He joked a little trying to keep the mood light.

Oh . . . dear. Jasper desperately tried to remember what he was thinking when around that vampire. It was extremely difficult how ever to recall every single thought one had. Jasper knew that this meant. It meant that Edward most likely knew about Jasper's past . . . bits of it if not the whole thing. And he also knew about his ability. Jasper wanted to tell Carlisle because if he found out from Edward then it would not look good.
"Thank you for the reassurance." Edward did not seem the kind to go around blackmailing someone, so Jasper was not too concerned. Besides, he did plan to tell everyone in this family at some point . . . from a more optimistic point of view, Edward was one less person he had to be concerned with telling.
He paused . . . trying to phrase what he was going to say properly. "If Edward is able to read my thoughts." -- Which he most probably did to see if Jasper and Alice were any sort of threat upon his family -- "Then I trust he already knows this." It was his way of expressing that he wanted to be the one to tell Carlisle. Once again he paused. Jasper never felt comfortable with telling this to anyone.
"Carlisle, you must have many questions about me and whether I am a threat or not. Judging from my markings, it is natural to believe that I may not be the safest addition to your family." His scars demonstrated a lot of things. He would start with that for now, and judge Carlisle's reaction . . . read his emotions.

"Carlisle, you must have many questions about me and whether I am a threat or not. Judging from my markings, it is natural to believe that I may not be the safest addition to your family." Carlisle shook his head, but in a firm kind way. "When you first showed up on our door, I will admit I was braced for a fight. However, It became easy to see, that in your case, you can not judge the book, by it's cover."
"Edward can not read all your thoughts, just the ones your thinking at the very moment. I am not sure what he knows. He has not said anything about your past, only that you were not a threat to our family."
"I can make a few guesses at the scars. However, I can not guess at the stories behind them."

Jasper felt extremely reassured that Edward had read his thoughts and seen no trace of a potential threat. Of course, Alice did not see anything in the near future either, but Jasper was not sure this family was as ready to trust her as he was. "There are a few things that I feel I should tell you about. Regarding my past . . . there are many things I am not proud of. Many things that I regret."
Would Carlisle's opinion of him change dramatically if he were to tell him of these things. "If you have any questions, or want to hear the whole story, please do not hesitate to ask." It was not something he would eagerly begin to tell but if this vampire wanted to know, then he would willingly tell him, sparing no details.
"When I first met Alice, I saw a fresh start. Leaving behind my past. So I wish to assure you again that I am no danger. Those days are far behind me."

"Jasper," He started, and reached his hand over to set it gently on Jasper's shoulder in a comforting jester. It was the first time Carlisle had actually touched Jasper at all. He did so now to him him that he was not worrying Carlisle. "I will not judge a man for his past. Only his current actions. As for them, I have only the highest and most positive thoughts on them. If you feel the need to tell me, I will not judge you harshly. I have seen many things in my life time."
"I can see this is stressing you some. If you are worried because Edward might know your past, then believe me when I say he will not tell a soul. He would only tell us what you were thinking if you had been a risk to the family. We know your not."

Carlisle's words were wise . . . and the fact that he felt so comfortable with him, enough to even touch him in the slightest manner, made Jasper feel at ease. Perhaps it was him reflecting the emotions he felt from Carlisle . . . but whatever it was, he felt relaxed. Carlisle's presence made him feel comfortable. Jasper did not recoil from his touch.
"My past has everything to do with who I am now. Everyone's does. I am just grateful that you would not judge harshly on my past actions." He looked down before looking at him once again. "The vampires I resided with when I was first turned were not even a fraction as generous and kind as you are. A vampire with qualities such as yours is a rarity to me Sir." Though Carlisle wished him to remain on a first name basis, Jasper could not help but speak with more respectful terminology. "They," -- [iShe[/i] -- "Wished me to lead an army to dominate lost lands. I did so. And disposed of each soldier once the task was complete." -- Once their usefulness was gone.[/color]

"I have heard of such things. I lived with the Volturi for a short time, I still keep in distanced touch. I also know of the great Southern covens and there wars." Carlisle explained, so Jasper would know he understood. "When I first saw you, I thought you moved like a solder. I had assumed it was from your human life."
Carlisle thought for a moment, "Actually, judging from your time turned...I wonder if I would be correct in guessing you would know more about the the many Southern covens' wars then I would..."

It was no surprise that he would have. He was much older, and so must have encountered and experienced many things in his long immortal life. "It was. I was a Major in Texas during the Civil War. My commanding skills were why I was put in charge of an army . . . of newborn vampires." That of course wold explain the scars which covered his pale skin.
"I was part of Maria's coven." If Carlisle knew her, then he did not seem like the kind of vampire who approved of her methods. "She wished to win back her lands. She had two accomplices: Nettie and Lucy. But it was not soon after her greed controlled her actions that they turned against her. It was a war: a bloody war between different sides, neither justifiable. And I . . . encouraged it. I was part of it. I murdered for it."

"I have heard of a Maria who ran a southern cover. Gave the Volturi headache with all her going ons. I have heard a few stories of her attacks on other covens..." His voice trailed off and for a moment his eyes narrowed as if remembering something. Then he face relaxed and he spoke again.
"Perhaps you did. However, she changed you, and you should enough experience to know newborn vampires and how their minds work. She was responsible for most of it. You are here now, and not fighting with her still. There for my opinion remains the same. How did you get out of that life?" He asked wanting to know what made a vampire warrior stop hunting humans and follow a pixie to--ahhh. A pixie? Was it Alice who saved him? Wouldn't that be romantic. Esme would love that.

"I was a part of it. If I had known that a life outside of that existed . . . perhaps I would not have been part of her world for as long as I was." He paused. This conversation was going a lot better than he had expected. Jasper really did not know what to expect, but he was feeling more and more comfortable with Carlisle as the minutes rolled by.
"A friend of mine found a mate within the group that I was commanded to destroy. He escaped with her and returned to me years later to introduce me to a life of freedom. A life outside of Maria's ruthlessness." He stopped as he remembered that time all too vividly. He was glad Peter and Charolette had made it out. Though he missed them, he did not regret leaving them. "I left Maria with him. And remained with him and his love for several years." It was not a happy time for him . . . but it was better than being under Maria's control.
"It was Alice who showed me a vegetarian lifestyle. I was completely unfamiliar with such a diet. And even more shocked to learn that there are other vampires who share a similar way of life. I wanted peace. I wanted happiness. And Alice's personality was everything I was looking for. Her smile is contagious." Jasper of course, meant that in a deeper way than one who did not know of his power may have assumed.
